Environmental Management

View all resources for this issue

Information on specific environmental issues such as water, carbon, biodiversity and waste can be found by clicking here. However all these issues need systematic reporting and measuring by the construction industry if we are to meet both our legal obligations and those placed upon us by a myriad of local and national governments, regulators, trade associations, customers, employees and shareholders.

Environmental management systems (EMS) are set out to ensure that organisations can identify their legal environmental obligations. They also identify the sources of environmental impacts, as well as how to mitigate their associated risks and report any progress being made.

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and environmental management standards such as ISO14001 and BS8555 provide a company level approach, whilst standards such as BREEAM, CEEQUAL, LEED and the Code for Sustainable Homes address issues at a project level.
