The Supply Chain Sustainability School welcomes the new Greener Railway Strategy published today by Network Rail, which sets out a shared vision for environmental and social sustainability across the UK rail industry. This strategy builds on the Rail Safety and Standards Board’s (RSSB) Sustainable Rail Blueprint.

To support the strategy and the infrastructure supply chain, we’re proud to be working in collaboration with Network Rail, the Railway Industry Association (RIA), and leading RIA members. Together, we are advancing the delivery of the Learning Pathways initiative, which aims to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach to sustainability across the entire Network Rail supply chain.

Commenting, RIA Technical and Innovation Director Richard Carr said: “We look forward to working with Network Rail and the Supply Chain Sustainability School to establish a co-ordinated industry-wide approach to sustainability which can drive performance improvements, financial efficiencies and a greener railway.”

Andrew Wilson, Programmes Manager at the Supply Chain Sustainability School said: “We’re proud to support Network Rail’s Greener Railway Strategy through our newly launched Learning Pathways. These resources are designed to build the knowledge and capability needed across the rail supply chain – aligning clients, contractors, and suppliers around a shared sustainability vision. By working together with Network Rail and RIA, we can accelerate the industry’s progress towards a more sustainable, resilient, and future-ready railway.”

He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), Chair of the Building Confidence supply chain assurance programme, and a regular industry speaker on sustainable procurement. He has been involved with the School’s leadership team since 2013.

“I’m pleased to be taking on the role of Chair at what is an important time for the School and the wider industry,” said Dale Turner. “Our sector continues to face significant sustainability challenges, and the School plays a key role in helping organisations and supply chains to respond. I look forward to supporting its continued growth and impact.”

Shaun McCarthy OBE will remain actively involved, with a focus on international development through Action Sustainability CIC, a social enterprise company, that will work alongside the School.

“It has been a privilege to Chair the School for over a decade,” said Shaun. “We’ve built something unique – an industry-led collaboration delivering real value. Dale’s experience and leadership make him the right choice to take this forward. I’m proud to continue supporting the team in a new capacity.”

Ian Heptonstall, Co-Founder and Director of the School, added: “Dale brings a strong industry perspective and a collaborative approach, having chaired several high-profile sector groups. Chair of the Board is an important role in any organisation, but in the unique collaboration of 230 Partner organisations that is the Supply Chain Sustainability School, the role is pivotal as we drive consensus and tackle some of the major challenges that the industry has.”
