DfMA Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work

The DfMA Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work is now published! We had a fantastic launch, with lively discussions and plenty of input from the 200+ strong audience of architects, clients, consultants, manufacturers and more. Catch up with the recording here if you missed it.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be releasing several short videos complementing the Overlay, featuring case studies and hearing perspectives from practitioners within different job roles on their experiences with DfMA, so keep your eyes peeled.

Offsite Leadership Group

The Offsite Leadership Group met on the 8th September to catch up on progress and discuss pressing topics within the world of Offsite and MMC. Emerging themes included best practice in managing material and resource availability in the current climate, and the need for effective sharing of data and modelling techniques with manufacturers. We’ll be taking these themes forward into our future training sessions and outputs.

Our next meeting will be on December 1st, 10-12 where we’ll be discussing social value and Offsite, as well as recent work on decarbonisation of precast concrete.

Sustainability Tool partners with Supply Chain Sustainability School to launch a free carbon calculator for supply chains

 

Sustainability Tool, a software application designed to help organisations and supply chains track and measure their sustainability performance, has today launched a carbon calculator, in partnership with the Supply Chain Sustainability School (SCSS).

With 80-99 per cent of the built environment’s total carbon footprint coming from their supply chain, the Sustainability Tool’s carbon calculator will play an integral role in supporting businesses in their fight against climate change.

Charles Naud, Head of Product at Sustainability Tool, said: “With COP26 approaching swiftly, there’s never been a more appropriate time for companies to delve into their supply chains for carbon measurement and reporting. The carbon calculator will be a company’s greatest ally in their quest to reach net zero and reduce their carbon emissions. With our suite of customisable and simple reporting software offerings, our aim is to be a one-stop-shop for all sustainability reporting and performance management.”

A spin-off of the Sustainability Tool, the carbon calculator’s purpose is twofold: (1) to support supply chains with calculating their greenhouse gas emissions, and (2) to provide clients with a view of emissions embedded in their supply chains (i.e. their scope 3 emissions). Suppliers can either input their emissions by scope (if those are already known to them), or complete a simple report covering fossil fuel, company travel, gas, electricity consumption, materials, waste and water data. Upon completion, the report automatically calculates emissions in a dashboard that supports submissions to Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and other carbon reporting frameworks. The system also permits suppliers to apportion a percentage of their carbon emissions to clients based on financial turnover.

The carbon calculator will be offered free-of-charge to Supply Chain Sustainability School members (suppliers), whereby they can register for free. The tool is also offered to Partners (clients) of the School, presenting them with a full view of their scope 3 carbon data.

Martin Gettings, Group Director Sustainability at Canary Wharf Group, said: “The carbon calculator has resulted from an industry-wide collaboration of clients, main contractors and trade contractors, across the Supply Chain Sustainability School. We’ve established a standardised data collection and reporting mechanism for supply chain carbon. This hugely benefits suppliers, because it enables one simple carbon measurement exercise, the results of which can easily be shared with their major clients.”

Julia Barrett, Chief Sustainability Officer at Willmott Dixon, said: “As a company committed to delivering net zero embodied carbon by 2040, it’s paramount that we equip our supply chain partners with the necessary tools and support to reduce emissions. The carbon calculator provides all our partners with a simple and robust approach to calculating and understanding their emissions.  Through this initiative, the Supply Chain Sustainability School offers a unique opportunity for our industry to work together in reducing our emissions.”

The carbon calculator is also available for usage across other industries, whilst the Sustainability Tool can help businesses report and manage sustainability performance across more than just carbon, whether that be within an organisation, its projects, contracts and supply chain.

The DfMA Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work is in the final stages of production and will be launched on the 15th September, at our online conference bringing together contributors and practitioners at the forefront of the industry.

Offsite Assessment

Another project almost at completion is our new Offsite Assessment, which we’re expecting to launch in October. This feature will allow School members to better position their Offsite knowledge within current best practice with detailed maturity statements. A tailored plan of learning will be recommended following completion which contains the most up to date industry knowledge.

Wates Group and Lloyds Banking Group are working together to pioneer sustainable technologies in a bid to accelerate the built environment’s transition to Net Zero carbon.

 

The new collaboration follows the launch of the Wates Innovation Network (WIN) Portal, a first-of-its-kind and free to use network that connects built environment customers to market-leading sustainable technologies and services.

Five suppliers will be chosen to present their product directly to Lloyds Banking Group and the most successful product will be piloted throughout their estate.

They are particularly interested to hear about products and services that will:

  • Reduce direct carbon emissions related to electricity, gas, and refrigerants
  • Improve energy efficiency in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technologies
  • Enhance building energy performance and control
  • Remove gas from building operations
  • Save water in commercial buildings
  • Increase thermal performance of the building fabric

The winning technologies will be piloted on Lloyds Banking Group’s estate of properties, helping them achieve their operational pledges to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions and water use. The collaboration builds on the businesses’ existing relationship, which includes a ten-year programme of fit-out works by Wates Smartspace across Lloyds Banking Group’s estate.

DfMA Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work

A key project of our Offsite group this year, the new DfMA Overlay is coming along well, and has raised some interesting discussions. We’ll be launching the Overlay in a virtual conference with keynote speaker Mark Farmer and other expert panellists on the 15th September, so make a note in your diary and we will release the registration link soon.

Offsite training needs assessment

Another project for this year is updating the School’s Offsite training needs assessment, which we decided was in need of a refresh. The new assessment will be more similar to our Digital assessment, with descriptive maturity statements so learners can more easily benchmark their knowledge level. We hope to launch this in the next couple of months.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School has been shortlisted in two categories at the Construction News Awards, Outstanding Contribution to the Industry and Supply Chain Excellence with Highways England.

The Outstanding Contribution to the industry award will celebrate an organisation who has achieved great things since it opened for business, that can demonstrate a sustained commitment to making the industry a better, safer, more efficient, more welcoming, more professional or happier place, as well as achieving things never thought possible.

The Supply Chain Excellence award recognises outstanding performance by a supply chain, where all partners have worked together towards common goals and can demonstrate improved performance between Jan 2020 to May 2021.

The Construction News Awards take place on 15 September 2021, celebrating 25 years of showcasing the very best in the industry.

Founded in 2012, the Supply Chain Sustainability School was born just as the sector started to understand that the growing demand for sustainability cannot be met effectively without significantly upskilling the supply chain. Given the size and complexity of the sector’s supply chain, this must be done in collaboration.

Starting with 7 founding partners and £350K funding from CITB, our objective was to reach 600 learners through our virtual learning platform. We achieved 2,000+ new learners in the first year.

Today, we have 125 partners and engage with over 50,000 members from over 15,000 businesses. The scope of CPD accredited learning has expanded over the years to incorporate skills for offsite construction, digital, management, procurement, heritage and lean construction.

Our vision is to be the world class collaboration to enable a sustainable built environment. This means much more than training. It is about leadership. With a critical mass of tier 1 contractors, clients, suppliers and specialist sub-contractors there is an opportunity to change our industry for the better.

Working with Partners, academics, and industry bodies, the School has led pioneering work to set new standards in climate change, modern slavery, social value, fairness, inclusion and respect, waste and circular economy, ethical employment standards, air quality, wellbeing, procurement, offsite construction and much more.

Environment Agency- reaching net zero by 2030:

The Environment Agency outline their road map for cutting carbon emissions and reaching net zero by 2030. This document sets out their commitment to cut our carbon emissions by at least 45% and offset the rest. It breaks down the sources of their emissions and the tangible actions they will take to reduce them. Find out more.

Laing O’Rourke sets sustainability and diversity targets:

School Partner Laing O’Rourke has set itself the target of being net zero in operations by 2030 and having equal numbers of male and female employees by 2033. The organisation’s decarbonisation target also sees the company develop a plan to tackle Scope 3 (indirect) emissions by 2050. Read more.

New state -control body to run rail projects:

The Transport Secretary announces that Great British Railways, a state-owned body  will set timetables and prices, sell tickets in England and manage all infrastructure. GBR will come into effect in 2023 and replace Network Rail as manager of rail infrastructure in the UK.  Learn more.

WATES ANNOUNCE ONLINE INNOVATION PORTAL TO BOOST TRANSITION TO NET ZERO

The Supply Chain Sustainability School are pleased to support and promote Wates’ new self-service, interactive and intelligent marketplace for sustainable technologies.

The Wates Innovation Network (WIN) portal is the first initiative of its kind and has been created by the Wates Group, one of the UK’s leading family-owned construction, development, and property services companies, to help businesses ‘build back better’.

The portal will connect companies directly and free-of-charge, with Partners that can offer solutions to help meet sustainability targets. It aims to create an industry leading network that will accelerate the transition to net zero by showcasing smarter solutions to design, construct and maintain buildings.

Ian Heptonstall, Director at Supply Chain Sustainability School, said: “The transition to NET ZERO is a huge challenge for our industry and to achieve this we need to think differently and adopt new technologies, products and processes. I’m delighted to provide the School’s support to Wates in the rollout of their new WIN portal. This is a great initiative that will foster innovation and raise awareness of the sustainable solutions that are available now and which can accelerate our journey to NET ZERO.”

There are currently more than 40 Innovation Partners featuring on the portal, all approved by a screening panel of environmental experts. Users can filter sustainable innovations based on their requirements to find the product and supplier most suitable for them. The new portal will enable users to connect with businesses directly and better support them in providing tangible environmental and operational savings.

John Dunne, Group Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Director at Wates, said: “The market for sustainable solutions is expanding fast and companies who are not investing in innovations will soon be unable to compete. The issue is 95% of market ready sustainable technologies never get considered because key decision makers do not know they exist, or suppliers don’t have access to the key corporate decision makers. The WIN portal is bridging that gap, showcasing innovation and helping businesses to meet bold environmental targets.”

Wates has been a Partner of the Supply Chain Sustainability School since 2013 and has played an active part in the development of the School as a world-class collaboration, to enable a more sustainable built environment.

FM Group Update June 2021

This Group represents the needs and interests of 21 Partners who either deliver, supply to, represent, or are clients of FM services. The quarterly meetings of the Group are chaired by Alison Bettany, Head of Supply Chain Commodities for EMCOR UK Ltd.

The meetings contain a mix of providing information about School activities, collaborative learning and developing new initiatives.

The group is actively developing a number of initiatives:

  • Developing a collaborative programme of learning events suitable for an FM focused audience
  • Engaging Partners in the direct delivery of some of this content
  • Focusing on social value in response to growing stakeholder interest and the Government’s procurement policy notice PPN 06/20
  • Supporting the School’s work on wellbeing, in particular its impact on productivity in the workplace
  • Considering how to adopt the approach taken by the School’s housing partners to packaging and single use plastics
  • Developing content for the Group’s annual FM Conference.

How can offsite help us deliver Zero Carbon Homes?

Decarbonisation of homes must be a priority if we’re to achieve our climate targets, both in new build and retrofitting, and there is a huge potential for job creation in the sector. How can offsite construction techniques help us grasp this opportunity?

By manufacturing homes and retrofit solutions offsite, environmental pollution and disruption is reduced on-site. Buildings can also be more easily standardised and constructed to the highest energy efficiency standards. In addition, modular construction and design for disassembly means that we can operate more in line with circular economy principles and reduce primary resource extraction.

In the next couple of months we’ll be exploring this topic in more detail across two virtual conferences, free to attend.

Infrastructure Group Update May 2021

The Infrastructure Group is the largest in the School with 63 Partners. Around 40 Partners regularly attend the quarterly meetings chaired by Graham Edgell, Director of Procurement and Sustainability for Morgan Sindall Group.

The meetings contain a mix of providing information about School activities, collaborative learning and developing new initiatives. At each meeting we try to invite a high level speaker to address the group about significant strategic issues, from within the sector and from other sectors.

The group is actively developing a number of initiatives:

  • Forming a cross-School group on social value in response to the Government’s procurement policy notice PPN 06/20
  • Developing a supply chain mapping initiative driven by Highways England
  • Delivering a partnership between 11 Delivery Implementation Partners (DIPs) on the Highways England Regional Development Programme (RDP) to provide a consistent approach to development and performance management for the supply chain
  • Setting up a group to enable utilities clients to collaborate around regulatory requirements
  • Adopting the approach taken by housing partners to packaging and single use plastics

The Supply Chain Sustainability School, a multi-award-winning initiative which represents a common approach to addressing sustainability within supply chains, has today launched a learning platform dedicated to building the skills of managers in the construction industry, to accelerate digital adoption.

Digital technology has the potential to transform construction – but only if the sector is equipped with the right skills and knowledge. Modern digital technologies can raise productivity, increase efficiency, improve quality and safety, reduce sustainability impacts and help attract people to the sector.

The construction sector has not increased its productivity over the last forty years and, as such, managers within the construction industry currently lack the skillset to lead the adoption of new digital technology. Without widespread digital adoption, the construction industry risks being marginalised and may lose a generation of new talent to other sectors. This new programme will support business leaders by equipping them with the right skills, knowledge and tools required to successfully lead the implementation of new digital technology solutions within their organisations.

Ian Heptonstall, Director, Supply Chain Sustainability School said: “Net Zero carbon, improved profitability, workforce attraction and improved safety and quality are just some of the big challenges our industry faces. We can continue as we are, or we can embrace new ways of working and the digital technologies that can help us to address these challenges. Our new training materials allow managers and leaders to understand the emerging digital technologies and the skills they will need to be an effective champion of digital in their organisation.”

Drawing upon one of the UK’s leading digital infrastructure projects, Tideway, and using best practice from Costain, Skanska and other main infrastructure contractors, the Supply Chain Sustainability Tool have created a series of free-to-access learning materials via a new Digital topic area, funded by CITB. This programme will provide a suite of learning materials, including workshops, e-learning modules and online resources to help managers embed digital technology in their business.

Jeremy Galpin, Lead for Digital Social Value Consultancy, Tideway East and Costain said: “These learning materials plug a key gap in providing freely available resources that, firstly, allow organisations and individuals to benchmark the digital leadership maturity of themselves and their organisations and, secondly, provide the learning resources to develop the gaps that they identify. Both aspects are critical to adding value. I am confident the programme will make a measurable and significant contribution to the digital leadership maturity of the infrastructure supply chain”

Phil Greenman, Supply Chain Manager, Skanska said: “As a major Tier 1 contractor we need our supply chain to be digitally advanced. Working with clients, contractors and our supply chain we have jointly developed a range of freely available learning resources that allow managers to develop the knowledge and acquire the skills that they need to drive the rate of digital adoption in both their own organisations and their supply chain. I’m confident that these new tools in the Supply Chain School will help businesses to do that.”

The School is co-funded by CITB and industry Partners, with the direction of the School being led by over 120 Partners – working in collaboration, they share knowledge and free resources to inspire the UK built environment to drive positive change and each share a common desire to upskill the industry.

How Do You Use the School as a Partner?

Our first involvement with the School was engaging with the Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) programme, to promote and develop FIR culture and staff engagement within our business. The vast resources made available by the School have helped fast track our learning.

We joined the School as a Partner in March 2019, to support our wider sustainability aims and work collaboratively with a cross section of industry professionals. We gain a valuable insight into Clients’ changing requirements, enabling us to respond with effective, sustainable solutions at the earliest opportunity.

Advanté organised a Supplier Engagement event to demonstrate our commitments to maintaining a sustainable supply chain, in the procurement of products and services, and in the delivery of our service to our clients.

We worked with Partners of the School to develop a policy to treat people responsibly, which resulted in the launch of the People Matter Charter. Since signing up to the commitments of the Charter, we encourage others to do the same, so that we can work together to address people issues, such as equality, diversity and staff retention, in the workplace.

What is the biggest sustainability issue facing the industry?

The Construction Industry’s (and therefore our) biggest challenges are the current and widening skills shortage and achieving the UK Government’s net zero carbon targets.

We aim to promote a positive image of construction by delivering high quality welfare units. We recognise that excellent site welfare and office facilities are required, to retain staff and attract a more diverse workforce into the industry.

In our mission to decarbonise instant start welfare for construction sites, we created our next generation of innovative, market-leading Oasis Welfare units – EcoLogic SOLAR.
