What is the FIR Steering Group?

The FIR Steering Group acts as the leadership group of the FIR Programme. It is made up of senior executives, key stakeholders and subject-matter experts from across the construction and built environment sector who volunteer their time, knowledge, and networks to ensure the programme delivers real, lasting change.

The group meets regularly to review the direction and delivery of the FIR Programme, challenge and support the delivery team, and help ensure the programme continues to meet the evolving needs of the industry.

Meet the Steering Group:

What do they do?

Members of the Steering Group play an active role in shaping the FIR Programme. Their responsibilities include:

  • Helping shape the FIR Programme by providing feedback from their own organisations and networks
  • Championing FIR across their businesses, supply chains, and the wider industry
  • Providing governance and oversight of programme delivery to meet funder requirements
  • Identifying gaps in provision and ensuring the programme does not duplicate existing resources
  • Guiding the long-term sustainability of the programme, including identifying future income streams
  • Holding the FIR delivery team to account for quality, timeliness, and effectiveness
  • Reviewing materials to ensure they remain current, evidence-based, and aligned with legislation

Why a Steering Group?

A Steering Group allows for focused, expert-led governance. Members are selected for their relevant expertise, professional standing, and commitment to fairness, inclusion, and respect.

This structure ensures that decisions are made by people with the skills and experience to make them well, while keeping the group agile and accountable.

Why is the FIR Steering Group a Closed Group?

The FIR Steering Group operates as a closed, invitation-only group. This is a deliberate and important part of how the programme is governed.

As a non-executive oversight body, the Steering Group needs members who bring specific, complementary skills and experience. Members are selected through a structured process that assesses their expertise across areas such as governance, EDI, legal, HR, procurement, and senior leadership – as well as their personal commitment to FIR values.

This approach ensures:

  • The group has the breadth of expertise needed to provide meaningful challenge and strategic guidance
  • Members can act in the best interests of the programme – rather than as representatives of their employers
  • Decisions are made by people with relevant skills and a demonstrable track record
  • The group remains focused and effective, without becoming too large to function well

While the Steering Group itself is closed, the FIR Programme is open to everyone. If you want to get involved – whether as an organisation, a champion, or a partner – please get in touch.
